WITH WORKS FROM
Rafael Goldchain, Toronto
Burkhard Schittny, Hamburg

The Spiegelgasse Active Museum (AMS) is a place for living, encountering and dealing with German-Jewish history. The place sees itself as an active institution of collecting and preservation, research and documentation, presentation and mediation.

In the building at Spiegelasse 11, two positions can now be seen that deal with the process of remembering. On the one hand, there is the work “I Am My Family” by Rafael Goldchain. Here he follows the traces of his own family history and creates a semi-fictional photographic family tree of his Canadian-Polish-Chilean-Argentinean-Jewish family — but he himself is always visible.

Loss of homeland is also the focus of the work of Burkhard Schittny, whose mother was expelled westward from Klodzko, now in Poland, in 1946. Schittny’s video is based on film stills from a project for which the artist covered the same distance almost 70 years later. The work is part of his group of works “Legacy Projects,” which revolves around the themes of power, war, and the crimes of National Socialism: “The shame of the responsibility of my parents’ generation obliges me to deal with German history.” Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
